Sarah from Scotland

Sarah ScotlandFirst of all, congratulations! Your decision to relocate and move to Australia is one of the best decisions you will ever make. Australia is a beautiful country with lots to offer. Fantastic food and wine, great weather, friendly people and some of the world’s best beaches! And working here is a great experience. It will be different to what you are used to, but it won’t take too long until you are up and running. Having recently relocated to Sydney from the UK, here are my top 3 tips to help you settle in to your new country from a business perspective. Here are my 3 tips for you:

Enjoy Yourself

You are in a great position – you have just relocated to a wonderful new country so really enjoy what you are doing, where you are working, who you network and socialise with. There is often a pressure to be up to speed with everything immediately – this won’t happen, but if you enjoy yourself along the way, you will settle in to life here much more smoothly in my experience.

Don’t Rush Into Anything

Take your time in evaluating your options – whether that be in finding a job once you arrive, choosing a suburb to live in, choosing a mobile phone plan – take your time. Often the decisions you make in your first few weeks will affect you for a long time after you arrive. There is no rush – take your time, ask for referrals, opinions on everything and make your own mind up. This should take the pressure off, especially if you are settling into a new role too.

Network
Network, network, network! As a newcomer, the best way to familiarise yourself with the lay of the land and to get up to speed quickly on how things work is to get out there and meet as many people as you can. This is the best way to build trust and establish your own personal network – but this does take time so be patient! But keep at it – always say yes to an invitation, especially in the first 6 months and especially when you may not always feel like it!

If you take everything in your stride, get out there and network as much as possible and enjoy what you are doing, you will set the foundations for a fantastic new life here!

Good luck!
