Smoking & Cigarettes

Smoking-cigarettesSmoking is becoming less socially acceptable in Australia. It is estimated that only 20% of the adult population smokes.

There are many reasons for this decrease in numbers over the years including high tobacco taxes, cigarette advertising bans, public education campaigns, and smoke-free environments laws. It is now illegal to smoke in pubs, bars, restaurants, airports, and many other public areas. It is also against the law to smoke in a car while children are present. Laws vary between individual states and territories.

Buying cigarettes

Cigarettes in are quite expensive in Australia compared to other countries because they are taxed heavily as products harmful to your health. A package of 20 cigarettes costs about $12.00 to $15.00.

When purchasing cigarettes, you may be asked for your identification, which you must show, even if you are over the legal age of 16 years old.

Cigarettes are sold in supermarkets and by news agents.
